Introduction to Akatsuki (Naruto)

- Akatsuki Information by Tsunade

While notoriously known as a criminal organization with a morbidly ironic name meaning 'Daybreak', the Akatsuki was first founded for an entirely different reason by three shinobi hailing from the oppressed Amegakure during the Third Great Shinobi War. Fuelled by his angst at the unfairness and suffering the 'Ame Orphans' - Konan, Nagato and himself - have had to face because of the war, he announced that he would end the fighting by becoming a God. Because it always rained in Amegakure (Village hidden by Rain), the name 'Daybreak' had a symbolic meaning to Yahiko as he wanted to stop his village from 'always weeping'. With his desire to create a world of peace, Yahiko recruited more supporters who shared his belief and formed the Akatsuki. Together, they spread their ideals of stopping war and violence, but the steadily growing group faced the threat of being hunted down.

Hanzo, the leader of the Amegakure fearing that the Akatsuki ideals would force him out of his position, aimed to put out the Ame Orphans. He threatened Nagato to kill Yahiko, or see Konan be murdered. With heroic courage, Yahiko 'kills himself' using the kunai Nagato was holding without hesitation, and entrusted the Akatsuki's mission of world peace to the latter.

Unfortunately, fuelled by the creation of Black Zetsu, the Akatsuki slowly turned into a criminal organisation consisting of about ten Missing-nin (shinobi who had severed ties with their villages) at each time. With their main goal being world domination by capturing all the tailed beasts, they are a dangerous group and the most wanted in the shinobi world.

Working in pairs, the Akatsuki seldom come together to a full assembly as they each have unique abilities and are able to accomplish their missions in lesser numbers. The organisation apparently has many different agents spread throughout different countries, who can hunt down the tailed beasts efficiently. Once the tailed beast is located, they employ their 'three-day long tecnique' which consists of nine Akatsuki members forcefully draining the spirit and chakra from the jinchuriki (human sacrifice) that the tailed beasts are sealed into.
