Suzumiya Haruhi, the title character from The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, is a high school student of North High School and is one of the most quirky female characters in anime history. Her initial introduction stated she will not tolerate her time being wasted by human beings and will only socialize with aliens, time travellers and Espers.

And so, with some unknown ability, she conceived the said beings into existence without her knowledge, and these beings have snuck into North High school to 'observe' their 'God' who created them, and somehow got arrested to join her dysfunctional club, which she created called the SOS Brigade. The actual words of the abbreviation SOS is debatable and one of the versions is: Saving the world by Overloading it with lots of fun Haruhi Suzumiya Brigade.

And so, she proceeds her daily High School life of tormenting her neighbouring club, The Computer Society, and cute lolita-looking Asahina Mikuru, a time traveller, by forcing her into sexy outfits.

The other preternatural beings, Nagato Yuki, an alien; and Koizumi Itsuki, an Esper, meanwhile try all ways and means together with the only sane character Kyon, to make life exciting and not allow Haruhi to fall into a depressive melancholic mood. For being melancholic would cause Haruhi to unknowingly space-time warp their current life into another world which is more exciting for her, and in turn cause the existing world to become non-existent.
