Echizen Ryoma is the title character in Prince of Tennis. Confident and arrogant, he is easily provoked into a match whether or not he wanted the match in the first place. This left-handed player's style of play is All Rounder and can adapt easily to his opponent's style and usually defeat them.
Ryoma's father is Echizen Nanjiro, a retired professional Tennis player also known as "Samurai Nanjiro". A quirky chap, Nanjiro loves to humiliate his son by beating him in Tennis and making fun of him for losing. As such, Ryoma's personal goal is to defeat his father in Tennis. The hours of play with his father also turns him into a strong Tennis player compared to most of his peers.
Ryoma's favourite phrase is "Mada Mada Dane" which means something along the lines of "Not good enough". He adopted this from his father, using this phrase to provoke his opponents the same way his father uses it to aggravate him. Nanjiro, in turn, caught the phrase from Tennis coach Ryuzaki Sumire.
Ryoma has one of the best records among the Seigaku regulars for being undefeated in matches and one can always count on him to save-the-day-and-beat-the-cocky-crap-out-of-Seigaku's-arrogant-opponents in matches.
