Background:
Yui Ikari appearance has been limited but important, nevertheless. She is the mother of Shinji Ikari, the pilot of Unit 01 and wife of Gendo Ikari.
She is one of the scientists that started Evangelion. She has been so committed in her work that she agrees to be a test subject for the Contact Experiment of Unit 01. To her family’s horror, Unit 01 seems to have absorbed her and she disappeared right before everyone’s eye. It was later concluded that Unit 01 has Yui as its soul. She now lives on inside the Eva where she can protect Shinji and what’s left from Second Impact.
Her manifestation is always to help Shinji out of trouble and in form of a blinding light. When her son dissolved inside Eva, she urges him to go back to the real world.
It is heavily implied that Gendo’s love for her led him to create Rei Ayanami, Yui’s genetic clone. Gendo is actually motivated to work in hope that one day, he’ll be able to bring Yui back.
