Arika Yumemiya is the protaganist of Mai Otome. An orphan whose granny just passed away, Arika travelled to Windbloom country to find out more about her mother, whom she heard was an Otome. There, she met Nina Wong, an Otome student, and the would-be queen, Mashiro Blanc De Windbloom, got entwined in a major attack, witnessed an Otome fight, and decided to become one too (because an Otome looks so very cool).
Arika has a very chirpy and friendly personality, and is by blood the real queen of the country, whom we see being released into the river (oh-so-cliche) as a baby. She became room mates and good friends with Nina Wong when she enrolled into the Otome school, Galderobe. She even fell in love with Sergey Wong, Nina's adoptive father, whom Nina happen to like too. (Sergey Wong sure attracts underaged lolitas).
When she was trapped in a secret passage in the castle with Mashiro and an attacking Slave, the Sapphire of the Azure Sky which she wears on her chain reacted and she made a contract with Mashiro, becoming her Otome.
