We first see Minagi Mikoto mysteriously floating in the sea unconscious, the first sign that Mai HiMe was going to be an interesting anime. The next we see of her, Mikoto was flinging a great powerful black sword, fighting fellow HiMe, Kuga Natsuki, and cutting up cruise ships with that sword. Whoa.
Mikoto is portrayed to be very much like a stray wild cat who is constantly hungry. She was brought up with the sole purpose of protecting her elder brother, Kanzaki Reito, who turned out to be the evil dark Obsidian lord. However, she lost her elder brother somehow, and ended up in the Fuka School searching for her brother.
Tokiha Mai is Mikoto's room mate and best friend. Mikoto sticks around Mai (sometimes literally) also because of Mai's cooking.
Although she looks like a small kid, Mikoto is one of the stronger HiMes, who didn't even have to fight with a Child until the very end.
