Enma Ai is also known as the Girl from Hell and is characterized by her wide-eyed look of silent detachment. Hailing from a small village of ancient Japan, she was forced into the job of delivering vengeance to those with, yes, a vengeance, by a 3-eyed spider who calls himself the Master of Hell. He does this by holding the souls of Ai's parents hostage.

Ai does her job with the utmost dedication, moving on with times and trends. From publicizing her services by word-of-mouth to advertising on newpaper classifieds to spamming on the internet, she also knows that the current fettish is girls in Japanese sailor school uniform; which is what she wears when she visits her clients nowadays. She also never fails to repeat her dreary words of contract to her different clients for the better part of 400 years. One has to admire her patience, for after 4 measley episodes of hearing her say the same thing, this reviewer was close to gagging with impatience to GET ON WITH IT!

Enma Ai has a tragic past, being ostracized for having strange powers as a child, and later being sacrificed to the Mountain Gods. Her appearance remains the same 12 year old look as when she died, with long straight flowing black hair and eyes that had turned red from bleeding tears of betrayal. During the course of her career, Ai resides in a land of eternal Twilight with a Grandmother whom we didn't know exist when Ai was alive, and whom does nothing but spin her wheel throughout the centuries.

Enma Ai also picked up 3 lackeys along the way to help dramatize the minutes before her victims die and to serve as straw dolls for her to play with when she's bored. Wanyuudou, who was actually the howling spirit of a wheel; Ichimoku Ren, the spirit of a lost sword; and Hone Onna, the wandering soul of a prostitute. In the second season, a purple haired brat called Kikuri also hung around with Ai. The 3-eyed spider also sometimes pop by for a silent visit, or rather, to act as a CCTV on the beams of Ai's cottage to spy on her. (The Master of Hell's hobby is to spy on little girls...)
