Inuyasha's biggest weakness as a half demon is turning into a mortal human on every night of the new moon. During that night, he will temporarily lose all his demon powers and he is also unable to wield the demon strength of the great sword Tetsusaiga. Inuyasha hates his human form as it renders him helpless against his enemies who were often demons or extraordinarily strong human like the Shicinintai.

A long time ago, Inuyasha once planned to give up his demon powers and be a full fledged human for good in order to be together with Kikyo, a human priestess. But their relationship didn't work out very well. So Inuyasha decided he wanted to be full fledged demon instead.

The people who know his secret of turning into a human on every night of the new moon are his companions, Higurashi Kagome, Miroku, Shippo, and Sango. Other than them, wolf demon Kouga, Inuyasha's rival in love also found out about his weakness when Inuyasha saved him in a battle. Kagura, Naraku's servant also found out about Inuyasha's weakness but she kept it to herself instead of reporting to Naraku.

Besides the night of the new moon, Inuyasha also lost his demon powers when he tried to cross the sacred barrier of Hakureizan which Naraku was hiding in. This resulted in him almost getting killed by Jakotsu of the Shicinnintai.
