Shindou Hikaru, the protaganist of Hikaru no Go, got possessed by Fujiwara no Sai, a ghost who died during the Heian period. Sai's spirit lingered on after death because he wanted to continue playing Go, and thus, got Hikaru to bring him around Go salons and tournaments to play Go.
For his first game, Hikaru played against the child prodigy Go player, Touya Akira, without knowing his legacy. He beat Akira easily with Sai's instructions. Ever since that game, he was chased by Akira, who saw Hikaru as a barrier to reaching a next level, unknown to him that it was Sai, a 1000 year old imperial Go master's strength he was chasing.
Hikaru, after gathering an intense interest in Go thanks to Sai, also chased after Akira's strength, unknown to Akira.
*Go is the Japanese name for the Chinese chess board game called Wei Qi. The chess game reached Korea and Japan from China around the 7th century. It is the oldest surviving board game in the world today.
