Touya Akira is the son of Japan's top Go player, Touya Meijin. Akira had been training to be a pro Go player since the age of 2 and by the time he was 12, he was the standard of a pro. Although he is a strong undefeatable Go player, Akira is a humble pleasant child whom even adults would consult him for instructional Go.
Akira's life changing moment was the first game he played with Shindou Hikaru. It was Hikaru's very first game in life and Akira was defeated by him. Ever since that game, Akira went into some kind of depression and became obsessed with defeating Hikaru in order to advance his Go skills. Unknown to Akira, it was actually Fujiwara no Sai, a 1000 year old ghost from the Heian era, whom Akira was chasing after.
*Go is the Japanese name for the Chinese chess board game called Wei Qi. The chess game reached Korea and Japan from China around the 7th century. It is the oldest surviving board game in the world today.
