Athrun Zala is a pilot of the ZAFT Special Forces. He is also childhood best friends with Kira Yamato, so it sucked when they parted when they were kids just to next meet as enemies on the battlefield. This gives Athrun a subtle angst factor amidst his otherwise very cool facade though, and that makes him really attractive and desirable to this star-crossed reviewer.

Athrun pilots the red GAT-X303 Aegis Gundam, Earth's prototype Mobile Suit Gundam, for the most part of Gundam Seed. He battles Kira's Strike Gundam most of the time, calling out to his best friend at the same time to join ZAFT (to which Kira replies in angst and tears that he has friends to protect and everyone widens their eyes). Athrun finally resolved to kill Kira when his comrade, Nicol Amalfi, was killed by Kira in one of the battles.

He failed in killing Kira, and joined him on Archangel when he gets an upgrade Mobile Suit Gundam, the also red ZGMF-X09A Justice Gundam. He met Kira's sister, Cagalli Yula Athha and they fell in love. Athrun has a rich taste in his love interests - princess of Plant, princess of ORB... All high flyer women. Anyway, it was just as well his fiancee, Lacus Clyne, ditched him for his best friend at that time.
