Andrew Wartfeld is a commander of the ZAFT force based in Northern Africa, and nicknamed 'The Tiger of the Desert'., probably because his personal pilot uniform and unit is painted with tiger straps. Andrew is an amiable coordinator, and keeps his cool during battles, usually successfully analyzing his enemies' movements with a cup of self-brewed coffee.

He met Cagalli Yula Athla and Kira Yamato in a cafe one day, invited them to his premises after an attack by the Blue Cosmos, and accurately guessed that Kira was Mobile Suit Gundam Strike's pilot. He then gave a memorable speech to Kira about how a war can only be won when one party dies before letting Kira and Cagalli go.

In a battle not too long after that, Kira defeated Andrew in his Tiger unit in a battle in the desert and Andrew was supposedly killed in the explosion along with his girlfriend / wife, the sexy Asha. However, towards the end of the series, he returns miraculously to join the Archangel as a commander of the stolen Eternal for the Lacus Clyne faction.

He lost an eye and an arm from the explosion in the desert but got fitted with automail.
