Takasugi Shinsuke is the main villian in Gintama. He is the former classmate and comrade in arms with Sakata Gintoki, Katsura Kotaro, and Sakamoto Tatsuma during the war to drive out the Amanto.

Takasugi Shinsuke's most admired person was their teacher, and was anguished when the teacher died during the war. After the war was lost, Takasugi Shinsuke formed the extremist rebel group, the Kiheitai, in the ambition to destroy the world which took away his teacher. He is now considered one of the most dangerous and wanted man in Edo.

His obsession with wanting to destroy the world was enough for him to betray his former friends. In the Benizakura arc, it was revealed that he joined forces with the Space Pirates Harusame by offering them the chance to kill Gintoki and Katsura, who took down one of their ships earlier on. This revelation caused Katsura and Gintoki to completely give up on Takasugi, swearing to take him down the next they meet.

Takasugi has a bandaged left eye and a trademark sinister smile, is often seen smoking his pipe and wearing a brightly coloured kimono. The lack of constant antagonists also made Takasugi a popular character in Gintama.

Takasugi Shinsuke's name is based on the actual historical Samurai and leader of the actual Kiheitai during the Meiji Restoration era; Takasugi Shinsaku.
