Shimura Shinpachi exists in Gintama as the punchline delivery guy, who gets exasperated at the ridiculous situations in the story, and points them out in frustration.

Shinpachi's family owns a dojo, which his sister and him struggled to keep alive after the death of their father, and the ban on swords. After the Amanto took control of Edo, and the Samurai lost their jobs, Shinpachi hopped around with part time jobs, often getting fired due to his clumsiness. In one of his waitering part time jobs, he met Sakata Gintoki, who beat up some Amanto who caused him to spill his parfait, and who happened to also be bullying Shinpachi.

After Gintoki helped Shinpachi to rescue his elder sister, Tae, from becoming a 'high leg' hostess in a floating brothel, Shinpachi decided to join Gintoki's Yorozuya (freelance do it all) and to discover the way of the Samurai through him.

Shinpachi's sideline is the captain of the Otsuu-chan Fan Club, which he calls "Otsuu's Imperial Guards", and where he sheds his kind and sweet bespectacled boy image, becoming a stern captain of a bunch of obsessed otaku.

Although he seems weak and meek most of the time, Shinpachi is actually quite skilled with the sword.

Shimura Shinpachi's name is partially based on the actual historical Shinsengumi member; Nagakura Shinpachi.
