Kondo Isao is NOT your average awe-inspiring leader. Although he is the commander of the Shinsengumi, he commands very little respect from non Shinsengumi members. Being dark skinned and burly, the nickname bestowed on him is 'Gorilla', to which he sometimes responds to.
Kondo Isao has a long ongoing crush on Shimura Tae, elder sister of Shimura Shinpachi. The crush started after after he asks her if she would accept an impotent man (which he is) to be her husband, to which she replied yes. Kondo then launched into his stalking spree on Tae, to which she violently beats him up each and every time she sees him.
Kondo is incredibly goofy, if not a complete doofus. Examples are when he crapped in his pants on a roller coaster ride and when he was set up on a blind date with a Gorilla Princess.
Despite being an idiot, the Shinsengumi members look up to Kondo with respect, especially Hijitaka Toshirou and Okita Sougo, as most of them were recruited by him after the sword ban in Edo. Hijitaka calls Kondo his oldest friend whom he set up Shinsengumi together with.
Kondo Isao's name is based on he actual leader of the historical Shinsengumi, Kondo Isami.
