Kagura is from the Yato heritage, the physically strongest alien race across the universe, known to be bloodthirsty enough to destroy entire planets. Her appearance is that of a chinese girl, and her skin is pale, almost transparent due to her Yato blood. As such, the Yato constantly carries an umbrella with her to shield her from the sun. Kagura's purple umbrella also doubles up as her weapon, and can shoot bullets out of the umbrella tip.

Kagura initially came to Earth to search for jobs to help her family's financial problems, and ended up fighting for a Yakuza gang with food as payment. She ran away from the gang after they started instructing her to kill their enemies, and was knocked down by a scooter with Sakata Gintoki and Shimura Shinpachi on it. After Gintoki and Shinpachihelped her out of the Yakuza gang, she forced them to allow her to work at the Yorozuya Gin-chan, although she doesn't get paid.

Kagura has difficulties controlling her immense strength, and often gets carried away and would start destroying things around her. So she was thrilled when she found a giant dog abandoned outside the Yorozuya's house, as she would not unknowingly kill it. She named the dog Sadaharu, after the previous pet rabbit which she unknowingly crushed.

Kagura's father is the famous 'Umibouzu", one of the strongest alien hunters across the universe, and together with Gintoki, helped to defeat an alien who took over the Terminal.
