Maes Hughes is about the most happy character in Full Metal Alchemist. His happy-go-lucky demeanor and relaxed attitude makes him easily the most likable character who isn't an alchemist by viewers. He is the best friend of cool Roy Mustang, and holds by his promise to help him climb the military ladder to the top. But unlike Roy's determined ambition, Maes is contented with being a family man who squeals at every opportunity to the rest of the cast about his "very kawaii (cute) Elissa!!".
Though Maes seems like a joker, we get a feeling that he was more than what he appears to be. And like Lust commented, for a desk-bound worker, he was awfully skilled with his throwing knives. He also told Roy Mustang that if he can't take the emotional trauma of war, then get a desk job like himself. That shows the wise side of him.
In the dark brewing conquest of the Homonculi's search for the Philosopher's Stone, Maes Hughes was one of the sacrifices who was killed by Envy. We learnt from his death that dying during duty is the fastest way to get promoted as he became the Bridagier General on his death.

I did receive an answer on our delayed item and they were very nice offered a 5$ coupon for the delay and and when I said we would just wait till next month I was told they would throw in a mystery item as an apolige. The customer service has been good and are forgiven.
