Izumi Curtis is our protagonists, Edward and Alphonse Elric's alchemy teacher and the person they fear the most. At first glance, she is an average housewife of a very intimidating-looking butcher. Hang around abit more and you'll find out she's an expert alchemist who has a temper like a loose cannon.

Izumi has a sad story behind her mysterious illness (she'll unexpectedly vomit blood). In an attempt to resurrect her baby who died at childbirth, she tried the forbidden human transmutation and as a result exchanged her internal organs and her ability to give birth ever again. In the anime, the failed transmutation resulted in the homonculus Wrath, who took Edward Elric's arm and leg at the 'gate' when Edward did human transmutation.

Izumi hates state alchemists, calling them the dogs of the military. She has a soft spot for kids and quite a tender heart. But most of the time, it's her fiery temper that flies in the direction of the Elric brothers.
