What is Onigiri? (Fruits Basket)
- by DyosaJapanese name: Onigiri
English translation: Riceball
Origin: Japan, 11th century
Main Ingredients: Plain rice. Salt. Nori. Sesame Seeds (optional).
Filling: Should be soft and salty. Japanese put in pickled plum but you may try and have fun putting in corned beef, tuna with mayonnaise or broiled pork.
Background:
Onigiri is a well-known Japanese rice snack shaped most commonly in triangle or oval and wrapped with nori (edible seaweed).
It has been Fruits Basket’s trademark due to its touching episode entitled “A Riceball in Fruits Basket” which is about Honda Tohru leaving the Sohma house to live with her relatives.
The episode shows how much Kyo, Yuki and Shigure treasures Tohru's company. With Tohru moving out, it triggers all their possessive and protective instincts to make sure Tohru is taken cared of by her relatives.
Onigiri is created as an enjoyable and easy way of eating rice. Tohru is compared to it since her household chores expertise and caring presence makes it pleasant and comfortable for Sohma males to survive their curse existence.
