Zangetsu is the name of Ichigo's zanpakuto. When Zangetsu is sealed, it looks like a giant version of a normal katana. It has a rectangular handguard and Ichigo carries it in a giant sheathe on his back. This version has not been seen since Byakuya Kuchiki broke it in two. Ichigo continues using what's left of it until Kisuke Urahara chops it to bits during his training.
The shikai form of Zangetsu is an "incomplete sword" with no guard or sheath. It bears the appearance of a giant elegant cleaver. Around six feet in length, Zangetsu has a black blade with a silver edge. This intends to reflect Ichigo's lack of control over Zangetsu's power, as it appears that the sealed form of the zanpakuto is not its natural form, the shikai is. Upon learning their zanpakutÅ's name, most shinigami gain the control to keep it in a subdued state. Ichigo has not yet been able to do this.
